November 2008 - thanksgiving ... giving thanks? PDF Print E-mail

The apostle Paul writes to the church that was located in Thessalonica a startling exhortation around the year 51 A.D.  The exhortation is at the end of his letter…

"give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
( Thessalonians 5:18)

There are circumstances that are easy to thank God for… circumstances where we are blessed or ones that create happiness.  But what about the circumstances that are tough, tragic or life changing?  We cannot see a way to give thanks.  The pain of the circumstances causes incredible painful emotions.  We want to withdraw from God…. throw a spiritual tantrum… just walk away.  We get impatient… we want to leave God.

Jesus knows what that feels like… some of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him.
(John 6:66)

Peter observed this and when questioned by Jesus if he wanted to leave also… it caused Peter to make a decision.  His reply was powerful and insightful…

"Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.  We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."
(John 6:68)

Where would you go?  It all gets down to trust… faith…. and love.  if you really love someone you will trust them… believe in them.  If I really love Jesus…. then I can give Him thanks in all circumstances.  Why?  Because he knows what's best for my life and I know that He loves me.  Here's the deal…  "for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."  It's God's will… you can trust Him… can you give Him thanks in all circumstances?
